This extraordinary Bearbrick tells the story of a cultural phenomenon that swept through Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020. Popular Japanese actor and comedian Muro Tsuyoshi, known for numerous TV dramas such as "Yūsha Yoshihiko" and "Gochisosan," launched a daily Instagram Live format at 8:16 a.m. titled "8時16分だヨ！湯呑みでコーヒー" (It's 8:16 a.m.! Coffee in a teacup). The deliberately chosen start time of 8:16 a.m. was exactly one minute after the end of the popular NHK morning show (8:00-8:15 a.m.) – out of respect for his colleagues working there, Muro didn't want to broadcast at the same time. For 58 days, he entertained his audience with casual conversations and a cup of coffee, which he deliberately drank from a traditional Japanese Yunomi teacup – a charmingly quirky cultural mix.
The vibrant design of this limited-edition Bearbricks perfectly captures the playful energy of these morning rituals. Scattered across the white body in colorful pastel shades—from pink and purple to orange and light blue—are countless sequences of numbers and characters from "8時16分" in various styles and sizes. The dynamic, almost hypnotic pattern creates a lively texture that reflects the diversity and vibrancy of the 58 live episodes. At the center, the Japanese inscription "8時16分だヨ！湯呑みでコーヒー" is prominently displayed in bold brown—a clear reference to the format's title.
The lower third of the Bearbrick transforms into a stylized Yunomi cup: warm brown tones form the vessel, while a curved rim at the top replicates the characteristic shape. This visual transformation from Bearbrick to coffee cup is a clever design element that perfectly encapsulates the concept. Standing 70 cm tall in its imposing 1000% version, this Bearbrick is not only a collector's item for fans of Muro Tsuyoshi, but also a cultural and historical document of a unique era. The collaboration between the actor and Medicom Toy—with whom Muro was even briefly under contract early in his career—fulfilled a long-held dream. This Bearbrick unites Japanese pop culture, pandemic history, and the universal comfort of a morning cup of coffee.
