Product description

Jean-Michel Basquiat is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. In the early 1980s, he rose from a graffiti artist on the streets of New York to a celebrated star of the international art scene. His works combine raw energy with profound symbolism, addressing themes of identity, racism, transience, and human anatomy. With the BE@RBRICK Jean-Michel Basquiat 13th Version (100%+400%), Medicom Toy dedicates the thirteenth edition of an exceptionally successful Bearbrick series to the artist, who passed away in 1988. The fact that a collaboration reaches so many iterations underscores the enduring fascination that Basquiat's work holds for collectors and art lovers worldwide.

The inspiration for this edition is the 1983 painting "In This Case," one of Basquiat's most powerful works. The entire surface of the Bearbrick is covered with the iconic motif of a gaping, skeletal skull, which, in typical Basquiat fashion, combines anatomical details with expressive distortion. Deep red tones dominate, spread across the body as broad, almost violently applied color fields, interspersed with black, white, and striking turquoise-blue accents. The grotesquely grinning teeth of the skull shimmer in green and yellow, while the piercing eye glows in warm gold. Fine white lines and scratches run through the composition like a net, giving the print the nervous, almost feverish texture that makes Basquiat's original work so distinctive. On the torso of the 400% model, the characteristic crown logo is also emblazoned alongside the "Jean-Michel Basquiat" lettering, unmistakably marking the homage to the artist.

The set consists of two figures: the 100% Bearbrick, approximately 7 cm tall, and the significantly larger 400% Bearbrick, approximately 28 cm tall. Both figures feature the same elaborate full-surface print, with the larger version naturally revealing more details of the original painting. The expressive skull depiction, in particular, unfolds its full effect on the 400% figure, making it an impressive display piece. Within the Basquiat series, this thirteenth version is among the most visually intense editions, as "In This Case" with its dominant red and uncompromising imagery possesses a particularly strong presence.

Whether as the centerpiece of a Bearbrick collection, a statement piece in your living room, or a gift for art enthusiasts – this Bearbrick brings the untamed power of Basquiat's work into a three-dimensional format. The Basquiat editions are among the most coveted series in the entire Bearbrick universe, and previous versions have sometimes experienced significant increases in value on the secondary market. Secure this piece of contemporary art history before it is sold out.

What packaging does this Bearbrick come in?

This Bearbrick comes in the official original Medicom Toy packaging (see specifications). This is often a collector's item in its own right and important for preserving the model's value. We take care to ensure secure packaging for shipping to prevent damage during transport.

What material is this Bearbrick made of and how do I best care for it?

Most Bearbricks are made of high-quality plastic (ABS plastic), unless otherwise stated in the specifications. For maintenance, we recommend gently dusting the figure regularly with a soft, dry cloth. On chrome versions, fingerprints should be avoided; cloth gloves may be helpful here. Direct sunlight and high humidity should be avoided to protect the colors and material over time and ensure long-term value retention.

How does the quality and mobility of this model differ from other sizes?

Medicom Toy's production quality is very high across all sizes. Larger models (400% or 1000%) often offer more space for detailed designs. However, the joints vary depending on the size: In larger models (400% and 1000%), the arms and legs usually rotate in a single plane. Smaller Bearbricks (especially 100% and 200%) often have ball joints, allowing for more flexible movement of the limbs.
