Product description
Jean-Michel Basquiat is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century: As a pioneer of Neo-Expressionism, he combined the raw energy of the New York street art scene of the early 1980s with highly complex visual worlds of symbols, anatomy, and social critique. Medicom Toy continues this artistic legacy in its Estate-licensed Basquiat series, and with this 2020 model, brings the fifth edition of the series to a Bearbrick – a convergence of contemporary art history and collectible figure.
A characteristic Basquiat motif, a skull-like, expressive face in powerful white set against a rich, dramatic red with deep black areas, runs across the entire body as a random pattern. Scratchy lines, grid-like structures, and raw brushstrokes make the artist's spontaneous, unpolished signature palpable. The motifs are freely distributed over the head, chest, arms, and legs, so that each figure shows an individual image section. The iconic Basquiat lettering, along with his famous crown signature, is emblazoned on the back.
The set combines a compact figure with a height of 7 cm and an imposing version with a height of approx. 28 cm in a mixed-size format. While the small size captures the image section in a concentrated manner, the large figure unfolds the motif across its glossy surface with full effect. As part of the official Basquiat series and due to the licensed art template, this model is equally sought after by art and Bearbrick collectors.
