Product description

When cinema legend Tom Hanks says, "Some say Casablanca or Citizen Kane—I say Jason and the Argonauts is the greatest film ever made," he's referring to the 1963 masterpiece that immortalized stop-motion pioneer Ray Harryhausen. Directed by Don Chaffey for Columbia Pictures, the film tells the ancient Greek legend of Jason and his quest for the Golden Fleece—but the true stars are Harryhausen's hand-animated creatures, which continue to inspire generations of filmmakers, including Peter Jackson, George Lucas, and Guillermo del Toro.

Of all the film's spectacular sequences—the bronze giant Talos, the harpies, the seven-headed Hydra—the final skeleton battle is considered the absolute pinnacle and Harryhausen's personal masterpiece. In this legendary four-and-a-half-minute scene, Jason and two of his Argonauts fight against seven skeleton warriors born from the implanted teeth of the slain Hydra—the "Children of the Hydra's Teeth." The complexity of this animation was unprecedented: Harryhausen had to synchronize 35 individual movements per frame (seven skeletons, each with five movable limbs), each precisely coordinated with the live-action actors. The result of his months of work: less than one second of film time per workday. In total, the sequence required a record-breaking four and a half months of production time.

The original skeleton models were made from cotton dipped in liquid latex and wrapped around thin metal armatures – a construction method that ensured these models remain among the best preserved in Harryhausen's collection. Each warrior carried a uniquely designed shield featuring mythological motifs: Medusa, lion, warrior, octopus, or minotaur. Their iconic appearance and mechanical, almost surreal movements created the eerie atmosphere that made the scene unforgettable.

This SECRET Bearbrick from Series 37 pays homage to the legendary skeleton warriors in stylized form. The metallic silver-gray finish with its cobalt blue lines evokes the bronze-like aesthetic of the stop-motion originals and captures the otherworldly presence of these undead guardians. The blue markings follow the Bearbrick's anatomy, creating that ancient mythological feel that continues to fascinate audiences. As a SECRET figure, this Bearbrick is among the rarest pulls in blind box series—a fitting status for a tribute to the film scene that made cinematic history and forever changed stop-motion animation.
