The blue tragedy becomes an exclusive SECRET: Ao Oni, the legendary "Blue Demon" from the cult Japanese horror game, embodies over 15 years of indie gaming history and internet phenomenon. What began in 2008 as a freeware project by developer noprops using RPG Maker XP evolved into a genre-defining icon of the explorer horror genre – with over 50 million views on Niconico and YouTube by 2013, Let's Play videos by PewDiePie and Markiplier, two feature films (2014, 2015), light novels, and manga adaptations. "The Horror of Blueberry Onsen" is the latest incarnation of this franchise, released in 2025 for Nintendo Switch and Steam, which relocates the classic mansion horror atmosphere to an abandoned hot spring resort.
This 7 cm SECRET Bearbrick captures the iconic Ao Oni in its purest form: The translucent, deep purple-blue material allows light to shine through, creating that eerie blueberry hue that gave the monster its name. The oversized head dominates the figure—characteristic of the original design—with its legendary, enormous white eyes staring out from black sockets, their sheer size making it disturbing. The deformed face displays the typical distorted features: the tiny, drooping mouth, the narrow chin, and the unnatural head shape that gives the Oni its unmistakable, nightmarish appearance.
The remake respects the minimalist aesthetic of the RPG Maker original: no unnecessary details, just the pure, stripped-down horror iconography that made Ao Oni a phenomenon. The slender body with its disproportionately long arms reaching to the knees and the stocky legs form the classic silhouette that has hunted millions of players through dark corridors. As a SECRET variant of the Series 51, this Bearbrick unites two worlds: the DIY indie horror aesthetic of the late 2000s, which created maximum terror with minimal means, and the exclusivity of the most coveted blind box category. With this piece, you secure a fragment of Japanese gaming folklore – from freeware download to viral hit to multimedia franchise that made its successful Steam comeback in 2024 and continues to terrorize new generations of horror fans.
