Our Week at the Medicom Toy 30th Anniversary Exhibition in Tokyo

Thirty years of Medicom Toy – we simply had to see this with our own eyes! So in late July we found ourselves outside the upmarket shopping mall Omotesando Hills, where a giant anniversary cake and a pearl-white BE@RBRICK guarded the entrance, and an enormous bear floated from the ceiling of the atrium inside. Six exhibition days – and we were there for every single one of them.

Lesson no. 1: The early bird…

On opening day, arriving at 8:00 am felt properly early to us – or so we thought, after all, sales and the exhibition weren't due to start until 11:00 am. But queue tickets 163 and 164 told a different story: we were already too late for the raffle of the coveted H×S model. On Sunday we planned to do better – and, thanks to jet lag, slept straight through until 1:00 pm. Our most important Tokyo tip was thus learned the hard way: set an alarm. Seriously.

From Monday onwards, the machine was finally running: on site from 6:30 am every morning, more than five hours in the queue, a ticket number below 60 every day – and with it, guaranteed entry into the H×S raffle. That draw was the most exciting moment of each day: had the early alarm and hours of queuing actually paid off? Would one of our tickets qualify us to buy this extremely rare BE@RBRICK? It's exactly this mix of anticipation and suspense that makes the exhibition so addictive.

This blooming giant is more than just a photo opportunity, by the way: it is the template for the Super Secret of Series 52. So if you open one of our Series 52 blind boxes, with a bit of luck you'll be holding the miniature version of this very bear.

Our tips for visiting the Medicom Toy Exhibition

The exhibition takes place every year – and if you fancy going yourself, feel free to benefit from the tuition fees we paid:

  • Be on site by 7:00 am at the latest. That's the only way to still get the full merch selection and a shot at the lottery.
  • Every day is a fresh chance. Medicom fairly splits the scarce quantities across all exhibition days – sold out on Monday doesn't mean sold out on Tuesday.
  • One piece per person, per model, per day. Plan your wish list accordingly.
  • Set an alarm. Jet lag is real – ask us how we know.

And now: the haul

Below you'll find everything we brought back from Tokyo. With the exception of Series 52, most of these models were available exclusively at the exhibition – every piece personally camped out for, hand-picked and (sometimes) won on site. We'll certainly be back next year. Until then: happy browsing!
